Review of Council Recreational Vehicle Overnight Camping Services – Tasmania

The Fifth Wheeler Network has carefully considered the Directions Paper – Review of Council Recreational Vehicle Overnight Camping Services which requires that Councils charge fees for the camping grounds which are currently provided free of charge or at minimal cost. The FWN strongly disagrees with the direction of the Review as not being in Tasmania’s best interest and has forwarded a submission to the Minister for Local Government. Our Conclusions to our investigations and the recommendations to the Minister are shown below and the full submission can be downloaded from: CONCLUSIONS – RESULTS OF RESEARCH The result of the independent research has led the Fifth Wheelers Network (FWN) to the conclusion that there has been significant errors made.

The decision by the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator to declare the provision of the free camps in question as “in breach of competitive neutrality principles under National Competition Policy”:

1. is completely out of step with the decisions of other states;

2. appears to be in breach of The Economic Regular Act 2009;

3. does not appear to conform with the Tasmanian Government Policy “Significant Business Activities and Local Government in Tasmania, April 2004;

4. does not fully take into account the affected market;

5. does not take into account the travel patterns of RV travellers;

6. will substantially increase the cost of visiting Tasmania to the advantage of the other States;

7. will not increase the turnover of the caravan parks making the complaints, while, at the same time…

8. …is not in the best interest of the businesses in the towns involved, and;

9. will reduce the number of visitors to Tasmania at the expense of the Tasmanian economy;

10. will damage the Tasmanian economy in the order of up to $40 million per year for the questionable benefit to only a handful of caravan parks.

RECOMMENDATION

The findings can lead to only one principal recommendation. It is recommended that following the receipt of all comments and submissions to the Directions Paper, the Minister requests the Regulator to review the Regulator’s decision.

The review should take into account the contents of all the submissions and new information including the apparent anomalies in making the decision, listed below in this submission. The Regulator then issues a report to the Minister accordingly. Should the Regulator not reverse the decision, then on receipt of that report, the Minister should, under Section 59 of the Economic Regulator Act provide the Regulator and the Complainant written notice that the Minister intends taking no action on the complaint. Alternatively, the Minister should advise the Complainant, the four Councils and the Regulator that based on further information received during this public consultation period, he will reverse his previous decision under Section 59 of the Economic Regulator Act and will now take no further action on the complaint. To do otherwise is against the best interests of the Tasmanian economy, will have a significant adverse effect on numerous small businesses directly affected, and risks causing a substantial downturn in Tasmania’s CCM traveller market, compounding the already reduced preferences of Tasmania as a destination.

Full submission can be found here. http://www.5thwheelers.net.au/nm/free_camping

Annual General Meeting and Gathering 4-6 November 2011

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT – PLEASE READ

Due to the changes in the free camping policies in Tasmania the location for the AGM and Gathering has to be changed. All other details remain the same but the location will now be in the grounds of the Redwater Creek Steam Railway in the mural town of Sheffield, Tasmania (www.redwater.org.au), Cnr Spring and Main Road.
There is a shed for our meeting, a men’s shed, steam trains (which could be operating on the weekend), a working steam roller, plus much more.
The camping fee would be $10 a night, which will be used on refurbishing some old rolling stock.
We apologise for the changing of the gathering area but the Kentish council is concerned due to the changes in the free camping policies of the Tasmanian government.

The notices of AGM and agenda were sent out at the beginning of this month; we are looking forward to catching up with as many members as possible over the weekend. Remember, if you can’t make it for the whole weekend, please try to get to the AGM at 2pm on Saturday the 5th.

State Coordinators needed

We would ask that members consider nominating as State Coordinators. The main purpose of the state coordinator is to arrange gatherings throughout the year and the administrative duties associated with that, eg, filling out attendance sheet, collecting money and accounting for expenses etc.

Currently we only have State Coordinators for Victoria (Daryl Jeffs) and Tasmania (Maxine Dowling).
Please think about volunteering for this role.

Hints and Tips: Checking and maintenance of fifth wheeler hitch

The information below is for a standard hitch. You should ask your dealer when taking delivery of your fifth wheeler to go through and describe how to check your type of hitch. We recommend that a plastic lube plate be used between the hitch and pin box, for ease of trailer hookup plus turning as this reduces friction thus stress on both the hitch and pin box.

Daily checks before hitching up to the fifth wheeler.

Check the hitch movement by rocking the hitch in both directions forward and back and from side to side, to see it moves freely.

Pull jaw lever out then release back into the closed position, making certain that the jaw locks into position. If the lever is a little stiff spray with a little CRC or WD40.

You are now ready to hook up the fifth wheeler.

Weekly checks before hitching up to the fifth wheeler.

Spray a little lithium grease around the jaws or if there is ample grease spray a little CRC or WD40 around the moveable jaw. (This keeps the lithium grease soft around the jaws.)

Pull the lever and engage the jaws in the locked position, to see if the jaw moves freely.

While jaw lever is extended, apply a light spray of lithium grease around the lever shaft; if there is ample grease give a very light spray of CRC or WD40 (keeps the grease soft).

Release the lever and make certain that the jaws and handle are in the locked position.

Check the hitch movement by rocking the hitch in both directions to see it moves freely.

If it is a little stiff, give a light spray of lithium grease around the pivot points; if there is ample grease give a very light spray of CRC or WD40 (keeps the grease soft).

Check to see if there is a light coating of lithium spray lube around the pin on the pin box of the fifth wheeler.

You are now ready to hook up the fifth wheeler.

I undertake a hitch inspection every 12 months, ie, if I use the fifth for a couple of weeks or before I do a prolonged trip from 6 to 8 month in one year.

I have made a quick check list that helps me check the basic items on the hitch

Check to see if the hitch plate oscillates both ways (this is done before removing the hitch from the stand).

Remove the hitch from the stand.

Clean all old grease and grime from around all moving hitch parts.

Clean the grease from around the pivot points.

Check all welds around the straps or slide plates that hold the jaw into place. Repair if needed.

Check the lever and around all moving parts for extensive wear. Repair if needed.

Paint any parts that have surface rust and let dry.

Check all bolts for excessive wear and cracking. Replace with 8.8 or higher grade bolts if needed.

Reapply lithium grease around all moving parts including the pivot points and pins and or bolt shafts (not thread).

10. Check tension on all bolts holding hitch support to tray, if any loose change with new bolt, nut and washer.

11. Replace hitch on stand and install bolts or pins.

12. Check lever and jaws, make certain that the jaws slide all way across throat of opening.

13. Clean and reapply a thin layer of lithium grease lube around pin on the pin box of the fifth wheeler.

14. Place plastic lube plate over pin.

Please note:

All bolts or pins to be 8.8 grade steel or higher; all nuts to be a locking type and suit the grade of bolts.

Item 5. The welds on the straps that hold the slide plate can crack or even brake if you try to hook up with the locking slide in the closed position. If this ever happens it is recommended that you remove the hitch from the stand and check the straps and slide plate. If not damaged replace and hitch up the fifth wheeler.

By undertaking these maintenance procedures your hitch safety is assured and will service you for many years with no mishaps.

There are two new sections: Non-members FAQs with a large variety of both questions and answers that prospective buyers have asked over the years; and non-members video links where prospective buyers and new fifth wheeler owners again can find information about fifth wheelers in a video format, such as the building of American fifth wheelers through to safety and maintenance tips for fifth wheeler owners.
Bob would like to hear from anyone if you have anything to add to these sections.

Adelaide River, NT

Several members have spent the winter months at Adelaide River, about an hour’s drive from Darwin. They are planning to leave soon but Maureen has sent the attached pictorial, which we thought members would enjoy reading.

Recipe: Tuna log

1 packet French onion soup
150 gram tin of tuna, drained
250 grams cream cheese, softened
¼ cup sesame seeds

Combine all ingredients, except sesame seeds, roll into a log and roll the log in the seeds. Refrigerate until set, approx. 1 hour. Serve with crackers and vegetable sticks.

Tasmanian freedom camp areas under threat

This article, which appeared in a recent issue of the Burnie Advocate demonstrates the very real threat to free camps in Tasmania.

We need to stop this getting any bigger and make it known that caravaners and motorhomers spend money and are a separate type of tourist.

Newspapers Tassie-wide are receiving a lot of feedback from caravaners and motorhomers and we need to keep it up and put more pressure on caravan park owners, the state government and all councils.

Bob has been writing to all the caravan forums and it sounds like it is working as the government is starting to give ground. The response to the story has been great and is getting the government backing down a little.

It is important that FWN members respond to this with letters to the editors and the Tasmanian tourism minister. See below for email addresses

Some Tassie paper links for you to read: http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2011/03/07/212371_travel.html

Bob Dowling has submitted the following to the Tasmanian newspapers:
“It has shocked me to see that the government has directed councils to apply the competitive principles to roadside camps, How do you compare and price of a caravan park with all the amenities including water and power with a roadside stop that has no amenities. Most fifthwheelers and motor homers do not mind paying a small charge for a roadside stop, but the charges have to reflect the amenities and services provided. It will be interesting to see how many large fifth wheelers, motorhomes and even caravans will pay the $1,800 to $2000 for the trip over Bass Strait then pay the high caravan park fees also. It will be interesting to see how much the caravan park fees will go up in light of this ruling of the regulator. The small businesses in these small towns can thank their caravan parks owner for the drop off in business this summer. The Fifth Wheelers Network Inc will be advising their mainland members to bypass Tasmanian this year until it is known how this will be administered.”

Hints and Tips:

TV signal booster

If you free camp and sometimes find it hard to pick up local TV we recommend that you purchase a TV signal booster. A popular size is around the 12dB range. Some members have done this and finds it makes a great difference. Pictured is a 12dB signal booster that is available from Bunnings; the only problem is that it is 240 volt.

Wineguard TV antenna attachment for digital TV

The Wineguard Wingman is an attachment that attaches under the antenna head. The Wingman improves digital reception (UHF) by 100% when attached. Fifth Wheeler Network members carried out tests 12months ago in the hilly terrane ofTasmaniaand found that the reception improvements were as claimed. The test report can be seen on our forum.

Wineguard troubles

Are you having trouble with your Wineguard TV aerial? Finding that your TV still will not pick up a signal even though you are close to the transmitting tower? There is a good chance that the cabling from the roof connector to the head of the aerial is broken, which can be caused by fatigue. Winding the aerial up and down over time and can cause the main centre signal wire to break leaving you with bad reception.

Joke

(Perhaps not completely PC, but I got a giggle out of it – Ed.)
A female dwarf goes to a doctor complaining of an embarrassing itch in the groin area.
The doctor looks her up and down, picks her up and stands her on his desk.
He lifts up her skirt and puts his head under. A little perplexed, she hears snip, snip, snip, snip.
The doctor emerges from under her skirt. “How’s that?” he asks
“Well it’s a lot better actually” she says “but … it’s still there.”
Undaunted he dives back under her skirt. Snip, snip, snip, snip.
Out he comes. “How’s that?” he asks again more confident.
“That’s wonderful! What did you do?” she asked.
“I trimmed the top of your Ugg boots.”

Hints and Tips: Battery maintenance and storage in very cold weather

With winter upon us it is a good idea to check and perform some maintenance on your batteries. For the members who have not travelled north this is very important as batteries do not like cold weather and will reduce their life if they get too cold.

Check the water level and top up to the fill level if required. Next look at the connections, if they have corrosion remove the terminals and clean both battery terminals and the lead terminals with a wire brush. Then fill a small old container with hot water, add a couple of spoonfulls of baking soda, stir, then drop the lead terminals into the water and leave each terminal in the water for 15 to 30 minutes. After the lead terminals are clean dip an old rag into the mixture of water and baking soda and clean around the battery terminals. The baking soda neutralizes any acid on and around the terminals.

Dry all the terminals with a dry rag then spray with CRC or similar product, reconnect the terminals and tighten, then cover all terminals with petroleum jelly as this will stop any moisture settling on the terminals and starting corrosion again.

In an area with very cold weather if you are not using your rig, it is recommended to remove the batteries from your fifth wheeler and store in a room that will not be affected by any frost or very cold weather. DO NOT STORE on a concrete floor or steel bench as these conduct the cold into the batteries. You should put all the batteries on a charger until they are required for your next outing.

All tips you see in our newsletters will also be put on our forum page for your comments and future reference.

Tyre safety

Members with American tyres still on their rigs should look at this video

You have to endure the 1 minute advertising before the video starts.

Weather safety hints:

With the winter weather and the floods that we have had in Australia we would like to just point out a few things you should look out for when travelling with your fifth wheeler.

Never drive through or in flood water on roads, as the water could be hiding deep washed out sections of road or, if the water is flowing quickly, it could push your tow vehicle and your fifth wheeler off the road without warning.

Never drive over flooded bridges as section could be washed away or as above could wash your vehicle and fifth wheeler off the bridge. If you do get washed off a bridge your chances of survival would be very slim.

If you know that there is bad weather coming within 24 hours, it is best to stay where you are and wait it out rather than trying to outrun it.

Look out for landslides and drive to the weather as danger could be around the next corner.

Do not drink flood or stagnant water as this could be contaminated.

Obey all road signs. If there is a road closed sign do not proceed; it is better to be late than not get there at all.

If you are camping next to a waterway or lake etc always be aware of the weather up river or inland, as excessive rain up river is the flood down river. Look at setting up camp at a safe distance from the water, some rivers can rise 6metres in two to three hours.

Be aware of high winds. If you are camped and high winds are expected, move away from trees and remove any loose items around the site that could cause a danger if the wind picks it up.

Always keep in mind the SES and emergency phone numbers in the state you are in.

New camp area – Nimbin NSW

If you are looking at driving from the Gold Coast to Casino through the mountains and have plenty of time, it has come to our attention that the Nimbin Showground, Cecil Street, is now open for 7 day camping. Phone 02 6689 1583; GPS 28 35 56s 153 13 36e

NSW 232a in Camps 6th Edition & NSW 233a in Camps 5th Edition

It is a great trip through this area and is recommended to all fifth wheelers, to drive to the road conditions.

New camp area – Burnie, Tas

It has been bought to our attention that if you would like a low cost parking spot in Burnie and you have a dog, cat, birds or a horse, the Wivenhoe Showground at 10 Smith Street on the east side of the Arched bridge over Emu River at Burnie Tasmania, is now available.
Shower, toilets, water, dump point 500mt along Bass Highway, phone excellent, TV reception excellent, fees apply.

Give them a ring and book in 03 6431 5882 / 0438 319 651 as the gates are locked. The Burnie farmers market in the same area every fortnight. Closed for the Burnie Show for week before and after the first weekend in October.

Showground camping area feedback:

We have had a complaint put on our Forum about the Clermont Showground that we think should be noted by all members:

“The showground apparently takes the “overflow” from the Clermont Caravan Park. As the caravan park now has lots of those awful cabins and many permanents, most of us are sent to the showground (certainly in winter). When we dropped in to the Isaac Council office to pay for our two nights, they charged us $10 per night for camping, which includes the use of toilets and showers (if you can find them) and water (tastes very ordinary, use a filter). Please note there is NO laundry facility and NO camp kitchen, both of which are provided for patrons at the caravan park. We were then staggered to be charged an extra $13 per day for the use of electricity. That’s correct, for a two-night stay in a showground/cattle yard we were charged $46. I believe this is price gouging; most places add $2-8 for electricity. Am I happy? Will I go there again? NO. Will I bother to visit Clermont again? Probably not, which is a pity because I quite like the place. Apparently there is unpowered camping available at Theresa Dam, 14km from the town, for $10 per night. Perhaps we will check it out next time … if we don’t have to retrace our steps to pay for it.”

Recipe: Steak Burgundy
Serves 2

2 good sized rib fillet steaks
½ tbs butter
1 cup red wine
1½ tsp finely crushed garlic

Method: Preheat oven to 180C. Marinate steaks in red wine 2 hours, then place each steak in an envelope of alfoil ensuring you have plenty to twist to top over to seal in steak. Mix butter and garlic together and place an equal dollop on top of each steak. Seal the steak by folding over foil. Put in baking tray and bake in over for 45 minutes. Serve with roast vegies or salad.

Royal Flying Doctors open Burnie Wynyard airport patient transfer station‏

Report by Bob Dowling, 4 August 2011:

Maxine and I represented the Fifth Wheelers Network Inc at the opening of the Burnie Wynyard patient transfer station in Tasmania. The airport provides 30% of the RFDS total Tasmanian patients and a covered transfer area has been badly lacking in the past. The Wynyard-Burnie is the first of a series of transfer stations proposed for all over Australia. The $250,000 station has been designed for the purpose of allowing the transfer of patients from the North West General Hospital’s ambulance to the RFDS plane in both the wet winter months as well as a shaded area in the warmer summer months.

The RFDS Tasmanian general manager explained that without the generous support of donors the service would not be what it is today, with 30% of the running costs coming from donations and the other 60% coming from both federal and state governments.

Some other facts that were learnt from the speakers.

The RFDS began by the Rev John Flynn, a minister with the Presbyterian Church. He witnessed the daily struggle of pioneers living in remote areas where just two doctors provided the only medical care for an area of almost 2 million square kilometres.

The RFDS started on the 15 May 1928, with the opening of the Australian Inland Mission Aerial Medical Service (later renamed the Royal Flying Doctor Service) in Cloncurry, Queensland.

The Victorian Section of the Australian Aerial Medical Services (later to become the RFDS) was the first to be formed in 1934.

The services to the Kimberley region of Western Australia, which is twice the size of Victoria, had a population of less than 20,000 people. The first base at Wyndham was opened in 1935.

The NSW Section was formed in 1936. Its Broken Hill base was initially operated jointly by the South Australian and New South Wales Sections and became operational in 1937.

The first base owned and operated independently by SA Section was opened in Alice Springs in 1939.

The Eastern Goldfields Section was officially established in 1937. In the Kalgoorlie area aircraft were flown on medical missions as far back as the early 1930s – before they were used for this purpose in most other parts of Australia. At that time the Goldfields Flying Doctor Service provided a medical service for people in the outback. Earliest records of the Service go back to 1931 or 1932.

The other WA Section’s first base at Port Hedland became operative on October 10 of that year, and the first medical flight was made on the opening day.

The Queensland Section was not registered in its own right until 1939. The Cloncurry base remained operational until 1964 when it was relocated to Mt Isa.

Tasmanian Section was the last Section to be formed in July 1960, although emergency medical flights were operated in Tasmania long before that, going back to the 1930s.

The RFDS operate a fleet of 53 fully instrumented aircraft equipped with the very latest in navigation technology. The RFDS operate 21 bases across Australia. Their pilots annually fly the equivalent of 25 round trips to the moon and the doctors and flight nurses are responsible for the care of nearly 270,000 patients! Some of which are travellers like ourselves.

After the afternoon tea provide by volunteers and an inspection of the transfer station, Maxine and I were proud of the fact that the Fifth Wheelers Network Inc’s preferred charity is the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Hints and Tips: Finding TV transmission towers when setting up on site

The best method if your TV does not show signal strength is to download the TV stations files onto your GPS, then once your wind up your TV aerial find the nearest TV station on your GPS and then with a compass point the aerial in the direction shown on the GPS.

If you missed the issue in an earlier newsletter about the Winegard antenna attachment – called the Wingman – this attachment will increase your chances of receiving digital TV by 100%. Members can purchase the Wingman from the network for $60 plus postage.

Tasmanian threat to council free or low cost short term camp sites

Thank you, to Bev and Frans Hamer for allowing us to reproduce your letter to the Tasmanian Minister for Tourism here:

“Dear Minister

We have been informed that there is a push by caravan park owners in Tasmania to force the closure of RV “free” camps, or low cost alternatives. This will no doubt be justified by the claim that caravan park owners are losing out on business because of the alternative camp sites.

As full-time RV travellers for the past 5 years, my husband and I spent 3 months in Tasmania 3 years ago and had a wonderful time. We spent approximately 2.5 months using free camps or low cost camps. We have a 5th wheeler van with everything we need onboard for our comfort. We do not need the resort style facilities provided by most caravan parks. We cannot afford to pay the prices that caravan parks charge, and still be able to travel and visit tourist facilities.

The cost of taking our rig and ourselves to Tasmania and back again is significant – it cost almost $2000 . We could justify this cost only by planning to use free camps for most of the time. Many RV travellers are in the same situation as we are. We are self-funded retirees, on a limited income and have to carefully budget our travel, especially with the rising cost of fuel and food.

We always intended to return to Tasmania and spend up to 6 months to explore the places we missed out on last time and spend more time in our favourite spots. As with many long term travellers, we do not want to be crammed into caravan parks with close neighbours. We like the ambience of camping amongst the trees or alongside the river or ocean, or in quiet little villages.

We can categorically state that if the caravan park owners have their way and we are unable to spend the majority of our nights in free camps or low cost camps, we will not visit Tasmania again. We simply will not be able to justify the ferry cost there and back, if we have to pay caravan park fees as well.

The caravan park owners fail to understand that there are two distinct markets. There are the families who go to caravan parks or resort parks for their annual holidays, and want all the facilities on offer for their enjoyment.

Then there is the so called “grey nomad” market which consists of people like us, who are living in their home-on-wheels or their home-away-from-home, on limited incomes, with no need of, or desire for the facilities provided by van parks for families.

If Tasmania allows this unfair discrimination against this very large and growing market, the caravan parks will not suffer as they will still have their families on annual holidays. However, all of the other businesses will suffer (fuel outlets, grocery stores, bakeries, newsagents, cafes & pubs, other retail outlets) as they will lose the very valuable retiree market.

Think about it carefully please – what right does one section of the business community have to demand government protection to the probable detriment of every other business in the community?

Regards,
Bev & Frans Hamer”

Attached is a copy of the reply Bev and Frans received from the Tasmanian Minister for Tourism. Bev and Frans also suggest it might be worthwhile writing to the Chambers of Commerce.

And then the fight started…

My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked, ‘What’s on TV?’
I said, ‘Dust.’
And then the fight started…

My wife and I were watching “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire” while we were in bed. I turned to her and said,
“Do you want to have sex?”
“No,” she answered.
I then said, “Is that your final answer?”
She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying, “Yes.”
So I said, “Then I’d like to phone a friend.”
And then the fight started….

Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife’s back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, “The weather out there is terrible.”
My loving wife of 10 years replied, “Can you believe my stupid husband is out fishing in that?”
And that’s how the fight started…

My wife was hinting about what she wanted for our upcoming anniversary. She said, ‘I want something shiny that goes from 0 to 150 in about 3 seconds.’
I bought her a scale.
And then the fight started…

When I got home last night, my wife demanded that I take her someplace expensive…
So, I took her to a gas station.
And then the fight started…

After retiring, I went to the Social Security office to apply for Social Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver’s license to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my wallet at home. I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and come back later.
The woman said, ‘Unbutton your shirt’. So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair. She said, ‘That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me’ and she processed my Social Security application
When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the Social Security office.
She said, ‘You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten disability, too.’
And then the fight started…

My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.
My wife asked, ‘Do you know her?’
‘Yes,’ I sighed, ‘She’s my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn’t been sober since.’
‘My God!’ says my wife, ‘who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?’
And then the fight started…

I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first.
“I’ll have the strip steak, medium rare, please.”
He said, “Aren’t you worried about the mad cow?”
Nah, she can order for herself.”
And then the fight started…

A woman is standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror.
She is not happy with what she sees and says to her husband, ‘I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly.
I really need you to pay me a compliment.’
The husband replies, ‘Your eyesight’s damn near perfect.’
And then the fight started…..

12 June 2011

DivX video format

A new video format or system called DivX is a great system for anyone who is on the road, because the DivX format allows you to have your videos, including HD movies, converted to disc or USB stick in a smaller, compact size. This allows you to have a large range of movies or TV shows on disc or large capacity memory stick such as the 256GB memory stick we recently had for sale through the buying group.

With the new DivX format you can even download movies or your favourite TV series from the internet and store them until you are on the road. All the major production houses are using the new format and selling them direct on the web with prices ranging from two dollars up to fifteen dollars for each movie. TV series can be purchased for around two dollars an episode or a full series for around twenty five dollars.

Your TV, DVD player, Blue Ray player, game consoles, set top box, etc must be capable of playing in Divx format so if you are considering buying a new TV or disc player it is recommended to buy one that has the DivX format option. Once you buy and register the appliance you will be able to download free programs that will convert your existing movie library into the new format; there is also a viewer that allows you to use your windows or Mac computer to play and view the DivX format.

To learn more about DivX go to http://www.divx.com/en

To see what movies or TV series you can download go to http://www.divx.com/en/movies/find-movies

Tasmanian threat to council free or low cost short term camp sites

Have you sent your letter to the Tasmanian newspapers and politicians yet? Following are copies that have been sent (that we know of).

(To 3 newspapers and Mr Bacon)

“We spent a memorable four months over the summer touring Tasmania in our fifth wheel caravan. You have a beautiful state with excellent facilities for RVers, and since returning to the mainland we have enthusiastically encouraged others to consider a holiday in Tassie. We were especially impressed with the extent of the overnight and freedom camping sites available at the majority of the main towns throughout the state.

We have heard that representatives of the caravan park industry are strongly lobbying the government to close down these areas. One can only assume that they believe that RVers should not be provided with these facilities and so be forced to stay in caravan parks.

Although they perceive that these freedom camping areas are impacting on their bottom lines, it’s debatable. Many times we could not get a site in a caravan park because it was full or could not accommodate the size of our rig.

Like most RVers we always support the towns that support our lifestyle. Accommodation is not the only expense to consider. We spend money at the supermarkets, service stations, hairdressers, pharmacies, clothes and shoe shops, hotels, restaurants and cafes, hardware stores, movie theatres, mechanics… the list goes on. If the caravan park lobby is successful, do the other business owners realise what affect it would have on their bottom lines when RVers start avoiding their towns because the overnight stop has closed down?

During our trip we chose a mix of 50/50 freedom camps and caravan parks – each form has its advantages and disadvantages – but we met many people during our trip who chose to freedom camp whenever possible. It is not cheap to get to Tasmania with an RV and the overnight and freedom camp sites help to offset the cost of transportation across Bass Strait. We certainly plan a return trip, but if we were to hear that the overnight and freedom camp sites are being closed down, we would definitely think twice before paying another $2000 to get there.

Membership renewals

Renewal forms have been sent out to all members whose memberships expire on 30 June. The club can only grow and improve with a strong membership base, so we encourage everyone to send in your renewals as soon as possible. To make it easier, this year you can also pay by direct debit into the club’s bank account. Just be sure to reference your name, otherwise we have no way of matching the payment to a club member.

Hints and Tips: Transporting water

Are you always running to the nearest town to fill up 20L jerry cans with water, then you might want to consider purchasing a water bladder. These bladders come in a variety of sizes and shapes and can be bought at boat or yacht accessory stores. The bladder will fit behind the hitch on most tow vehicles. Depending on the height of your tow vehicle tray, you may need a pump to transfer the water to your rig, but if your tray is higher than your rig’s water tank all you do siphon from the bladder to your rig. Pictures shown full bladder (150 litres) emptying the bladder by siphon method.

Tasmanian threat to council free or low cost short term camp sites

There is a move in Tasmania to force the Tasmanian councils to restrict and even close free camp areas in their municipalities.

The move is being led by four Tasmanian caravan parks owners. As we all know the caravan parks are leading the way in lobbying councils in all states to either stop the opening of new overnight stops or closing or limiting the use of existing overnight rest stops.

We came across this on our travels last year where the Qld government and the councils or shires are making showgrounds that provide low cost camp sites put in grey and black water systems within the next three years. If they do not install the systems they will not be available to us as an alternative.

The present Tasmanian government is resisting the move but we all know that this can change quickly if they do not hear from the other side of the argument.

If you have been to Tasmania or are thinking of coming to Tasmania in the near future we recommend that you make your feelings known by putting a few words in the public opinion section in a Tasmanian newspaper or write to the minister of tourism. Michelle O’Byrne Michelle.O’Byrne@parliament.tas.gov.au or GPO Box 1470, Hobart, 7000

If we do nothing we could loss these free or low cost short term camp sites. If you hear of any rumours or stories about state governments or councils trying to close any free or low cost camp area on your travels, we would like to hear from you via email with all the details or newspaper clippings. The network will then contact the authority in the area.

Hints and Tips: Preparing to travel

Are you getting ready or already on your way travelling north this winter. It is recommended to check the following basic items before heading into the outback, where you will not have the services to repair or replace any items.

Check your tyres and make certain they are in good condition, as you would be very lucky to get some tyre sizes and there can be a long waiting period to get them to a country town.

Replace your hot water anode before heading off or you could be paying out for a new hot water cylinder.

Check your spring bushes and replace if there is any wear what so ever.

Keep a check of your rig’s tyre pressures; with the cost of fuel these days being over $1.50 per litre it will save you money.

Check your rig’s weight with all your gear loaded. The cost of the weigh bridge will be cheap if you are over weight as we have heard that the authorities have been pulling over caravans, motorhomes and fifth wheelers over the last few months and checking the weights.

Service your hitch by removing the turn table, turn upside down and checking the welds of the steel holding the slide, look for any bad wear and, of course, grease all the moving parts. Also check all the bolts holding the hitch to the chassis and tighten if required.

Have your tow vehicle serviced as it can be on the expensive side to get the same service in the outback or country plus you can use your regular service centre where you know that the service is good.

The last and one of the most important items: check your lights, check and replace any globes if required.

Then you can start your trip knowing that you have done all the necessary checks.

Safe travels.

Recipe: Rama chicken

½ cooked chicken (skin removed)
375 ml bottle of your favourite tomato based pasta sauce
2 tbls sour cream
1 capsicum de-seeded and sliced

Method: Cut up chicken, mix with pasta sauce and capsicum in a saucepan. Season to taste. Bring to boil stirring in sour cream at the end. Reduce heat and simmer 5 minutes.

Two brooms

Two brooms were hanging in the closet and after a while they got to know each other so well, they decided to get married.

One broom was, of course, the bride broom, the other the groom broom.

The bride broom looked very beautiful in her white dress.

The groom broom was handsome and suave in his tuxedo.

The wedding was lovely.

After the wedding, at the wedding dinner, the bride-broom leaned over and said to the groom-broom, ‘I think I am going to have a little broom!’

‘IMPOSSIBLE !’ said the groom broom.
‘We haven’t even swept together!”

16 April 2011

FWN Web site

Just a reminder that the user name and password for access to the members only section of the web site is noted at the end of every newsletter, as are several useful web links.

Bob has just completed a major overhaul of the non-members section of the web site and is currently working on the members section. He would be grateful if FWN members could look at the non members section of the web site and let him know if you see any mistakes or broken links. Plus he would love some feedback, opinions and ideas on how to improve the site.

Remember: The web site members section is for the benefit of members and the more people who assist with the input the better it will become.

The non members section is for persons who are considering buying a fifth wheeler and contains information that we consider to be unbiased to help the prospective buyer select a fifth wheeler over the other forms of RV options. If any member has any advice like hints, tips or other advice for these persons send an email to me at president@5thwheelers.net.au and Bob will put it on the web site.

The facebook-type pages (fifthwheelbook) on the web site will replace the chat section, which will be more useful than the old chat section. Members can have their own group and there is an option to make the group private to only people in the group.
There has been an admin page started on this site already that has a description of the web site problems, such as broken links and planned down times, if any.

Member referrals: We would like members to also let us know of any companies out there that have gone out of their way to help a member with a problem. These companies will be put on the web site under their state at no cost as a reward for their services to FWN members. Then, if another member has similar problems they can look up the state they are in and contact the same company.

Bob is also putting together some lists of dealers and service centres for known fifth wheeler tow vehicles, eg, Ford, Chevy, Iveco. If you would like a type of vehicle listed let him know and he will put it on the list.

The photo gallery and forum section of the web site has been partly upgraded and should be completed by 20th of April.

We would like to stress that Network members do the right thing when it comes to the environment and safety of other road users. Remember that other members will be visiting the same area in the future and would like to use the same and enjoy these areas.

Fifth Wheelers buying group

We have had a great response to the idea of a buying group and Bob has been busy sourcing some fantastic deals for FWN members.

Price $13.00 per unit (plus shipping)

Also: Are any members interested in genuine software for their computers?
Some packages available: Windows7, Adobe software, Microsoft Office software. If you are interested please email store@5thwheelers.net.au with your requests. We have an opportunity buy some software at wholesale prices.

An important notice about the FWN web store:

Items in the web store are available to FWN members but with a 20% discount on the web listed price. To receive this discount the item must be ordered via email and not directly through the web site and PayPal. Send an email to store@5thwheelers.net.au noting the items you want to order and instructions about ordering/paying will be emailed to you.

Also: We are looking at rechargeable batteries in many sizes to include on the Network store. If any member would like a special rechargeable battery for their camera or any other item, let us know and we will try to obtain it through our list of wholesalers.

Hints and Tips:

When and if you are storing your rig.

If storing your rig for long periods of time, fill the fresh water tank with clean water then add a large cup of white vinegar. This will stop the water or tank from going bad and/or tainting the water. When ready to use your rig, empty the tank and refill with fresh water. Also ideal for new water storage tanks or vessels before using. If you are using a new hose when you empty the tank, empty the tank through the new hose. This removes the plastic taint in the water plus kills any bacteria when using new plastic tanks, vessels or hoses.

Recipe: Easy salmon rissoles

415g tin pink salmon

½ cup whole egg mayonnaise

1 cup mashed potato

1 cup crushed Jatz cracked pepper biscuits

Mix all ingredients together and season to taste with salt & pepper.
Shape into cakes and bake in oven 1800C for 20 minutes or until golden.

Variation: Add 1 chopped onion, sautéed in oil into rissole mixture before shaping into patties.

Welcome to new members…

New wine for seniors

California vintners in the Napa Valley area, which primarily produce Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio wines, have developed a new hybrid grape that acts as an anti-diuretic. It is expected to reduce the number of trips older people have to make to the bathroom during the night.
The new wine will be marketed as Pino More.

 20 March 2011

Fifth Wheelers buying group

Bob would like to know how many members would be interested in a buying group type system.

He has been given the opportunity to give members some great bargains. To receive the great prices we have to buy 3 or more of each item.

The system would be a simple way to purchase items at great prices. For example: cameras both still and video, sporting gear including back packs, camping gear, laptops including PC tablets, desk top computers, storage devices, home theatre projectors, solar panels, wind turbines, accessories for i-phone and i-pad, MP3 and MP4 players, plus much more. The products are continually changing, with new products at the end of each month. Members would even be able to suggest the products to be put on the site

Each monthly special will be advertised in the newsletter plus on the web site (members section). Members can order first by sending email to store@5thwheelers.net.au, then when lowest number needed has been reached within a given time frame, a discount coupon will be emailed to the member/purchasers, who then go onto the store pages with the discount coupon and pay for the item. If the amount has not been reached they will get an email to tell them that it has not been reached. If someone orders an item and then does not pay for the item they will not be able to buy through the buying group for a period of time.

The buying group web page will be in the password protected members section. The shop will be on the open section where anyone can see it

If you are interested in any of the products all you have to do is purchase via the network store through the safe PayPal system. All goods would be delivered to your door within a week in major centres and 10 to 15 days in rural areas.

Bob will only set up the group if a number of members are interested. If you are interested please contact him at store@5thwheelers.net.au within the next 10 days. He would like to know before the new web site is completed.

Have a look at the FWN web store at www.5thwheelers.net.au/Store

For example:

e-book reader $90 with 3 buyers

256 GB memory stick $25 with 3 buyers

10.2” android tabled $210 with 5 buyers

Hints and Tips: Level your rig the easy way

For easy levelling as you drive onto your site, this great idea is to fix a level or ball indicator to the front of your nose cone, or there several products that can be attached to your hitch box as pictured. Then when you are at your camp area you can drive along the area till the level shows that you are level. If the ground is sloping you can see from your driver’s seat how much you will have to pack the wheels

The Fifth Wheelers Network has purchased some nose cone type indicator types in two sizes: small 12.7cm x 5.1 cm; or a larger easy to see model 22.9cm x 5.7cm (those pictured are not the models available). Please contact Bob at president@fifthwheelers.net.au for more information and prices.

A woman stands by her man

A woman’s husband had been slipping in and out of a coma for several months, yet she had stayed by his bedside every single day.

One day, when he came to, he motioned for her to come nearer.

As she sat by him, he whispered, eyes full of tears, ‘You know what? ‘You have been with me all through the bad times. When I got fired, you were there to support me. When my business failed, you were there. When I got shot, you were by my side.

When we lost the house, you stayed right here. When my health started failing, you were still by my side… You know what Martha?’

‘What dear?’ she gently asked, smiling as her heart began to fill with warmth.

‘I’m beginning to think you’re bad luck…’
